Functionalized HA has even attracted research interest as a cancer therapeutic. CD44 is overexpressed in many tumor cells. Companies are also exploring new ways to formulate HA. Contipro has invested in electrospinning equipment that it uses to make nanoscale fibers, thin films, and fabrics from HA blends. HTL is looking at producing other biopolymers—such as chondroitin and heparosan, both of which are now only available derived from animals—via fermentation and combining them with HA.
The products in her brand, Dr. Elsa Jungman, which launched last year, have eight ingredients or fewer. Matic has seen the same trend at Kline.
Consumers now are less credulous and less content with basic formulations supported with glitzy marketing, he says. They want active ingredients with proven efficacy delivered at appropriate concentrations, and they want to see visible results.
This higher standard reinforces demand for ingredients like HA, retinol, certain peptides, and others that have bodies of peer-reviewed research supporting them. The new facility will have 2. Related: Enhancing Cosmetics. Alderys has expertise with microbes beyond the lactic acid bacteria that Givaudan relies on for its HA, as well as genetic engineering and cell culture technology. Givaudan is hoping to use the new capabilities to optimize production processes and obtain HA with even more precise molecular-weight distributions, among other projects.

Consumer Products Hyaluronic acid is just getting started Expanding markets and new chemical modifications will make the cosmetic and medical ingredient even more common than it already is by Craig Bettenhausen May 2, A version of this story appeared in Volume 99, Issue In brief Hyaluronic acid has come a long way from its discovery in eyeballs. Hyaluronic acid at a glance.
Longer-chain, higher-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid forms stiffer, more viscous water gels. Shown here are water gels with average weights of 2,, 1,, and kDa left to right. Credit: Shutterstock. The cosmetic industry in general has moved away from having animal by-products.

To address age-related changes in skin quality and appearance, HA injections are an attractive treatment option. Hyaluronic acid can be injected into the dermis of our skin to fill and plump specific areas. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and botulinum toxin are both widely used to treat wrinkles. HA synthesis by keratinocytes was also evaluated.
The positive control, 1 mM retinoic acid, exerted the expected stimulant effect on hyaluronic acid synthesis. The stimulation of hyaluronic acid synthesis by the studied signalling oligosaccharide-based ingredient was thus demonstrated and shown to be clearly dose-dependent. Two clinical studies were conducted to measure the visible effect of this signalling oligosaccharide-based active ingredient.
The first one was a 2-month single-blind study on a panel of 26 female subjects mean age: Different parameters were measured: skin moisturisation, suppleness and smoothness. Superficial moisturisation was measured using a Corneometer while in-depth hydration was determined thanks to a MoistureMeter. The measurements made after one month are summarised in the Figure 5 results after 2 months available upon request.
The results obtained clearly showed that the use of the studied active ingredient enabled maintenance and amplification of dermal and epidermal moisturisation. Visco-elastic measurements were performed with an Aeroflexmeter, developed by the Sederma innovative instrumentation unit patent filed. But a picture is worth a thousand words as illustrated in Figure 6.
The second clinical study was a selfevaluation performed by female subjects with, in the majority of cases, dry or wrinkled skin.
