Comment by To give you an idea of how big his targeting range is, I was doing the Abberations Must Die daily in Storm Peaks and hit it to see if the Drake was near, and got this guy. I then flew probably yards to Icecrown and found him dead.
Should make knowing if he's up fairly easy. Comment by Aljo He should be easy for protection paladins. I've managed to solo him in blue gear, bubbled once and BoPed once mostly just to make sure he doesn't interrupt the heals, can't really say it was close.
The interrupts are war stomp 3 or 4 seconds stun and a knock-in-air attack, throwing you about yards in the air. I've stalked him on my flying mount until he was alone, then spanked him. Good luck, Frostbiters! Comment by Soloed as a blood specced dk lvl 80, hp i had at the time. Dropped leather bracers with stam,ag and ap.
Comment by Im not sure about his spawn timer, however. Ofcourse it could be just a fluke :P. Comment by Ruhler I seen this guy spawn in my face at the large gate while searching for mine nodes.
As mentioned, it's too dangerous to fight him near his spawn point, so let him follow his path for a ways. I pulled him to the side 'ditches' where no enemies roam. He can be easily soloed by an 80 Shaman with mediocre gear.
Comment by mekanikos I picked him up with the Frostbitten macro Like the Storm Giants and Fel Reavers, you should be able to see this guy from a pretty far distance off. Comment by tegrenath Be warned if you're attempting to solo him, he has a stun that he likes to use.
This can be troublesome for getting off clutch heals and the like and also was pretty nasty when trying to take him with Evasion. Comment by Jagno People have mentioned that you can target and see him from a great distance, and to further support this I just targeted him when I accidentally hit my rare-mob macro from inside the northern bank in Dalaran.
Twitchy fingers can pay off! Edit: In response to disagreements, Putridus has a huge patrol path all the way across Icecrown. When he gets to his very southern and eastern point on the path, he is close enough to be seen and targeted from Dalaran. Comment by Silvertale Comfirming the fact that he can be seen from a great distance.
I was flying from one of the flying quest hub ships, when I spotted him near the gate before Icecrown Citadel. He can be seen from a great distance similar to elites like Fel Reaver and Thrym. Comment by Soloed as a ret pally, had to use Lay of hands and bubble heal, only healing I did. Comment by Robyn Immune to roots, and hits pretty hard against 16k armour as a moonkin, he killed me twice by stunning as i tried to heal Comment by Skriblz Soloable as a level 80 frost mage.
I solo'd this guy about 10 minutes ago on my mage using mirror images and my elemental. I'm unfortunately almost certain that it's alot harder for classes who cant mess with threat or have a pet. What I did; Pop water elementals, Mirror image and Icy veins, nuke hard. He for some reason decided to kill my water elemental first, maybe an odd threatlist.
Killed the elemental, killed the images, I coldsnapped and resummoned. He died. Most important thing though, remember to blink out of that stun. Comment by Cronollo Just solo'd him as an 80 Enhancement Shaman, waited for a spot where there were no mobs just before The Bombardment and then did the normal preparations, summoned Wolves, totems, the works.
After the first stun I nearly died thank you Maelstrom Weapon , but the second didn't last nearly as long. I was a little scared going in, thought he'd be harder, it seems where you fight him is the key. Comment by LordSothe My macro picked this guy up in southern Icecrown. I flew around looking for him for about 3 minutes before I found him at 68, He wasn't moving at the time, so he must have been at a pause in his patrol route. Anyway, due to his size, he's quite hard to miss once you're close for him to appear in view distance, but he can be targetted from very far away.
He had more health than I was expecting, but he was easily solo-able. His melee attacks were fairly weak against my plate armor, but they were strong enough that they could probably pose a significant threat to someone with cloth. The biggest problem with this guy is that he tends to hang out near other enemies -And, as you've undoubtedly noticed if you've quested in Icecrown, many of the mobs there have VERY large aggro radiuses. When he finally feel, I had an extra six mobs on me, and three corpses that had been AoE'd down during the fight.
Comment by i can't believe i found this. Comment by Dimension Soloed him as a 78 prot pally, used my bubble and Lay on Hands though.
I don't know if it was glitched or not but I killed him as a 79 elite, not I spotted him while flying to Shadow Vault from Dalaran. Comment by ok at pm today my guild member yelled on vent that some big thing was walking though icecrown so i flew from dalaran right to her and there he was but already tagged so i was woundering if some one could find out a respawn time on this guy.
Comment by Dairystyle Solo'd with my prot paly easily. He dropped "of the Invoker," 17 gold and a stack of frostweave cloth. Not too bad for a chance encounter. I recognized the model but it was out of place for the area I usually see them in and then saw the silver elite dragon. Beat an Alliance by mere meters to it too.
Comment by drded Hey, just soloed him as a 80 affi warlock. I can tell you some things about this rare. His spawn timer is 6 hours : My friend killed him I targeted him and killed him I targeted him again but never killed him this time.
Putridus the Ancients body: 54, Me standing: 68, If you want to see if you can solo this rare elite try to kill the Undead mob called Pustulent Colossus at 48, He have around the same health and hit for the same amount of damage and uses the same Warstomp ability. Hope this helps for all the Frostbitten farmers. Just dropped 2 bombs hits 50k each and it was a dead monster.
Got the Northern Exposure achievement and his loots. I don't exactly know was the quest bugged or something :P. Comment by Aezur I'm curious. While flying over the edge of stormpeaks, almost in icecrown headed to the argent tournament, my npcscan popped up saying it had found putridus. I did three circuits of his patrol route to no avail. I later realized that I had not done any quests in icecrown, and as such haven't phased it at all. Would that be a problem?
I was afk in the argent tourney grounds inside the main tent getting daily's from the grand champion argent dude cause I am a champion And a mod which I was using managed to pick up this guy from all the way from where I was.
I flew around and didn't find him in the current area so I quickly checked here for his pathing and saw just how far away he was. I eventually caught up to him and duo'd him with a Frost-Spec Deathknight. Dear god this thing is massive!. Comment by Furl I was questing with my 78 lock tonight and saw this guy was up; I had seen him before on my 80 lock on another server, but didn't bother to kill him then.
Since my 78 had yet to have killed anything for Northern Exposure , I decided to solo this guy. He is quite hard to follow around on a normal flyer.
Nevertheless, I pulled him around south of Aldur'thar, where he pats on a archway that is clear of mobs. Took about minutes, the felguard actually lived , and I got a boomkin version of the bracers and the standard 20g and 20 cloth.
Comment by vengy my NpcScan picked him up while i was at the dalaran inn. Comment by Soloed him as an 80 elemental shaman. Had to follow him around for a good spot to kill him. He hits like a truck and he stuns to. Had to pop heroism and earth elemental totem and killed him. Frenzied Regen, Overpower, Bladestorm.
As many before me have said, the biggest key here is to catch him away from all the other mobs in the zone. Comment by Spawns around 67 64, sprints north to around 60 40 area then begins his slumberous patrol counterclockwise untill he meets corp'rethar then turns around and returns. They killed him in under 10 seconds. If this isn't a bug, it's bloody stupid.
Comment by Faradize hes so huge. Flew over to Icecrown and located him around 68, Switched to BM spec and downed him with my gorilla.
He walks extremely fast so fly to the front of him a little ways before you land. Easy kill. My loot included a Giant's Toewrap of the Marksman.
Comment by Today I was in dalaran, alliance side at the portals. Was just talking to someone when Npcscan told me Putridus the Ancient was spotted, so i clicked on the animation, and I targeted him, but i couldn't find him though. Since when does this mob appear or can be targetted in Dalaran? I was able to target him, but not see him. A hunter that I could not see presumably killed him. Anyone know what quests I would need to complete or have already completed to make this area inaccessible?
Comment by Very easy to solo as shadowpriest, VE almost outhealed him. Comment by Was standing in dalaran waiting for my raid to pop full when my NPC scan suddenly warned me about Putridus!
Quite astonishing how far npcscan targets the rare elites! Comment by Very solo'able. I solo'd him on my 80 Boomkin, in pvp spec and pvp gear. Dropped 18g, 20 frostweave, 8 eternal water, and the bracers. From there on, he assumes his patrol route as described on the map. Comment by Takamuri I can confirm that you can still target him in Dalaran.
I was wondering wtf and target him even, and when I tried search for him I couldnt find him Flew to Icecrown and checking it was so strange. Comment by I was initially camping on top of Aldul'thar I was killed, was invited to join another group while in spirit form, but wasn't given credit for the kill! The GMs said I wasn't part of any group. Frustrated, I began camping at Thursday PM - 20 hours later - spawned right in front of the Bone Sentinel, Putridus stood for a while before moving out towards The Valley of Lost Hope.
I frantically typed for help in General chat but since no one was replying, and since I saw someone else moving in, I had to attack.
After about a minute, I got Putridus! Thanks to the two other Alliance players who came seconds later to help out. Comment by why did this rare appear on my npcscan while i was in dal the VH door? Comment by I targeted him from the engineer's shop so probably his model is loaded from the whole dalaran area npcscan uses this. So a respawn of 7 hours and 10 minutes So its not a 6 hour respawn, but perhaps hours - Happy camping guys!
Comment by hannibalektr Yeah my targeting addon picked up in Dalaran! He was all the way dead by the time i got there in icecrown at Now that is insane! Comment by Got a hit today and ended up chasing him as he was traveling towards the horror gate and then back again. Two failed attempts and a death resulted in me racing to catch up only to find a Paladin attempting to beat him in the middle of a field of mobs.
Needless to say, the Paladin didn't last long. I followed him until I reached a place with minimal mobs, the gates near Dalaran and leapt into the fray with my pet Survivalist Hunter. Was just able to down him just, as my own health was almost out, Fiented death to get the other off my back and claimed my prize. So word of warning Don't just jump into the fray with him, or you'll get swarmed with mobs.
Defineately a case of 'look before you leap'. Comment by ellesion This guy is so huge, he can be targetted from dalaran if he walks halfway icecrown. He popped up as soon as he respawned.
The addon is great if you need to find other rare mobs especially for Spirit Beasts, hunters! Comment by Spawn timer? I found this guy twice He was a couple of hundred yards from the infra green bomber daily structure in the bombardment when I caught up with him, I could see him as a red circle on the map the entire flight from dalaran before he came in to view.
Comment by lol i have a rare npc Scanner that alerts me when a Rare is in targeting range XD it found this guy when i was siting in Dalaran 0. Comment by I was just standing in Dalaran, and my npcscan went off. I was able to target him, and even set focus.
Sortly after, i watched him die. But never could see him. Is he bugged? Comment by Killed him at I'd also suggest you wait for him to move away from the Ghouls otherwise your almost guarenteed to die Without a healer. Comment by Aenonar NPCscan wen't off like crazy when flying around in Storm Peaks, at first I thought I had finally found time-lost, as the icon was yellow as well.
But quickly noticed that it wasn't : Couldn't find the mob I had targeted though, but when I glanced over towards Icecrown while in the Vrykul village I could see a tiny name tag far off in the distance.
Indeed massive targeting range :S Mistook him for a super hard rare-elite, so called for backup from one of my healers on the alt account, but before I could get it there it was already tagged by an alliance hunter that messed up so damn bad that I thought he'd die. He ran around all over the place picking up up to 5 adds and almost died.
But another allied hunter jumped in at the last second and helped him, unfortunately Comment by Just downed him a few minutes ago at Aldur'Thar. Horde shaman had allready tagged him by the time i got there, but he was flagged for pvp and a nearby caster killed him, and while he was being attacked i ran over to the gate and tagged Putridus.
Solo'd easily as an 80 blood Dk. Dropped "of the Bandit" 15g 20 frostweave cloth and 3 crystalized earth. I try to kill him now with all cd's gone etc but get swarmed by all the elites around him.
He rape me, I die. Run back to my corpse just to found out he is dead. Comment by People are saying things about the target radius on this guy, I think it comes down to your level of detail settings, if you have it set real high the game will attempt to load mobs which aren't even visible, I've had this happen with NPCScan on a number of occasions where it would detect a mob before it was loaded in the game, my setting are set to max.
Comment by Exorsist Early morning. Woke up, logged on, got my dalaran daily fishing quest and went to the sewers for that jewel. After 2 casts - BAM! Npcscan pops up. My reflexes took the best of me - equiping all my tanking fear im a feral druid , running towards the dalaran flight master and flying down.
While doing all of that, I automatically opened wowhead. Twice I've encountered him and lost him to another player. The first time I targeted him with my macro I searched for several minutes up and down trying to find where he was patrolling without losing sight of him. It was very frustrating to see his health start to die down because someone else found him first.
The second time I found him I chased him all across the map trying to kill him. I died twice since he happens to patrol through endless armies of elites and then AGAIN someone tagged and killed him. I HATE being a clothie in this situation. I lose it to a paladin every time. Ready to punch someone in the face. He's really easy for healing classes, just HoT yourself up and use whatever instant damage you can manage, he'll interrupt every once in awhile, but cake other than that.
Comment by NPSscan detected this in Dalaran. The guy is huge. Comment by Okay I could target him but I could not attack him, I flew outside of dalaran because I thought he must be in Crystalsong forest and then he dissapeared from my target How the hell and what the hell was he doing near dala, or was it NPCscan that was playing me a trick?
I could target him and such, I have no idea what happened. Not a problem in the slightest, no kiting required. Had been camping the area southwest of Aldur'thar since there are only neutral fallen hero mobs running in that area, and they do not assist. Putri spawned at or so server time in the conflagration and pathed right into the narrow valley where it was relatively easy to take him down with ease. The argent tournament daily to kill converted heroes brings a fair amount of traffic to the area and theres some risk of losing him, but I was very lucky no one was there at the time : Definitely wait for him in a safe spot, and do NOT wait on the east side of aldurthars gate if you choose that spot, as a couple of ghouls run right up onto it every now and then.
Today however, I was flying to do my Citadel quest and he spawned right in front of me by the Horror Gate. Point being: He may spawn by the Broken Front, but not always. Happy Hunting!
Comment by vartsika very easy soloed as 80 prot warrior found him at broken fort and dropped some bracers with int spirit and sp. Comment by Telamir Killed at server time Steamwheedle Cartel. Easily soloed as a bear druid. Comment by Definitely just popped up in The Violet Citadel in Dalaran, scared the crap outta me Comment by fooka just spawned on my server skullcrusher but he died to what i can only assume as the fabled elite mobs because he went down quick but he wasn't grayed out so i guess it was another mob Was at the shadow vault when my addon picked him up, he meleed my mirror images for around 1.
He was also immune to my freezing effects and stuns, not that I'm complaining about the stun immunity as a frost mage! He dropped the usual random enchanted toewrap and a sachel with 25 gold, 20 frostweave cloth, 7 crystallized air and 7 crystallized earth.
I am a surv hunter with a wolf pet. I fought him on one side of one of the gates, managed to get him down fast enough before and mobs patted around to make my life miserable. Comment by nintendorichard Found him in front of Corp'rethar yesterday at PM. Unfortunately, I didn't get to fight him because someone else came and killed him.
Comment by I was camping for that Giant, for three weeks. Camping him was like chasing a darn Unicorn, I felt like I was never ever going to ever be able to kill him. I finally got him yesterday with only one left to get Frostbitten Achievement which is Varygosa. He has a very large target range, even targets him all the way from Dalaran as others above me has stated. If you are going to camp him, your best bet is to camp in two places- The Mord'rethar gate with the skeleton giant there OR The Corp'rethar gate.
You can fly, patting back and forth along the path route. Those two are your best bets to get him, and do not AFK at all while camping him because you will miss him.
I've missed out on killing him so many times because I AFK'd for a min to do whatever, and come back he had spawned.. He basically spawns and dies, it's that fast lol. I killed him at the Corp'rethar gate just before the adds, I was going to wait and let him walk further down past all the adds and then kill him but after seeing and knowing players are coming in range on him, I had no choice but to pull him and attack on the spot, knowing I'm on a very highly populated PVP server.
Another thing, make a good habit of cleaning out your Cache when camping him or any rares, whenever you log on or off, just be sure to delete the cache because if he is cache'd, NPC scan won't pick him up.
If you spot him and need or even want to kill him, be sure its in a area that are add-free, because adds and him beating up on you can do some good damage at once.
Keep in mind, he does an attack move that is like a stomp that has a knock-back effect, so be careful and hope you don't pull more adds from that knock-back and kill him fast, because other players will fly in and try to steal that kill. He walks rather faster than your usual npc add walks so he really stands out in Icecrown and you can't miss him.
PVP servers- down him asap because other opposing factions will gank you and take your kill, without a doubt. For me, it was around hour spawn timer.
Comment by Djongov After many hours of exploration and observation of this very specific rare elite i can make some real conclusions that: Respawn timer - From hours. He can spawn any minute between the 8th and the 10th hour of his last kill randomly between this time-window.
After i camped him and lost him few times in a row, i observed 3 of his spawns with my own eyes and one after another. Conclusion was that he never spawned before the 8th hour of his klll and never after the 10th. As some of the comments here pointing that he is on the all rare spawn timer - hours and some saying 10 it totaly fits to what i have observed. Meaning and it always proves.
Reaction to players : If you see him even tagged , go for it , hit it and prove the achievement system that u are present there and you will have the kill for you too. Problems with this rare : I dont know for your realm but mine has more than 20 people camping and doing stuff at 5 am in the morning.
But as i stated above, u can have a credit for killing him even on grey not tagged by you. So the only thing you need to do when he spawns is to go and hit it. Of course you need to do it fast because u have no idea how many people call in within seconds when their Scans alert for him.
As well-said here at some of the comments these addons go crazy when he is around , he truly is detectable from really far Dunno if from Storm peaks because i have never tried it myself , but its possible. I measure the targetting range of the game and Putridus in my video. Video of Killshot , position to camp him , how players in and out of party got the kill too and observations from where we see him and how far the target range is -.
Comment by so frustrating when npcscan alarm goes off and i cant find the npc. Comment by I killed this guy twice within about a 12 hour time period today. This is the rare spawn I've encountered the most. I've likely killed him times total now. If only I had such luck on some of the others!
Comment by He's bigger and has a bigger target range than your average NPC. Comment by Etreum Extreme happiness is, finding Putridus at the right time, at the right place and with no other players or NPCs near!
Comment by Both times that I have seen Putridus he spawned right at the "Mord'rethar: The Death Gate" 68, 59 He spawn timer appears to be between hours. His body remained for at least 15minutes after the kill.
I flew out to Icecrown and he was still up with all of his HP, as I got closer I noticed him starting to run, so I thought someone was pulling him. Got close enough, tagged him with Corruption and dropped him in about 3 seconds. Pretty weird, cause i looked at my NPC overlay, and he's gonna be in Icecrown?
And i could target him in The Storm Peaks Comment by He drops a sack that contains around Gold, and 20 Frostweave Cloth. Just thought I should add this : Took me one step close to Frostbitten!
Comment by knifeshade I ran into him on and off before Cata, and had not seen him for months. After spending 6 weeks looking for him, I opened a ticket asking if it was possible I was phased in Icecrown and would not see him. The GM told me 'No, he's still in-game, you must just have bad luck". I logged, cleared the cache and logged on with my main, got to Dal, and couldn't find him. Looked for a bit on his paths, nothing. I was phased for sure. If you are having problems finding him, pick up the daily and start your hunt!
Comment by djactionman He's huge. Also he walks pretty slow, so it takes him a while to make his route. I didn't get much, some blue bracers, nothing cool. Killed him with a 77 Prot Pally solo. Im a lvl 75 fire mage. Waited to engage him untill he was at a good spot where i could kite without pulling other mobs. Comment by Just killed this guy at am server time central time he was walking by the argent tournament grounds. GL to anyone trying to kill him :.
Scan dinged when I was really far away from him. Comment by enojy Ugh, getting tired of camping this guy. He's the last one I need for Frostbitten, and having completed Bloody Rare already, I'm a little anxious to seal the case here.
Been waiting around the center of his route for nearly a week now, and nothing. Sure glad I have other things to do in the meanwhile! Always spawned near the "5 o' clock" spot in his route and pathed counter-clockwise. Comment by halflife Randomly went off while doing quests out there, took ages to find him because he was no where near where I was, 21g and 20 frostweave cloth inside the satchel.
Comment by Jaldy Does anyone know if you need to complete phasing Icecrown in order to see him? I alt tabbed while watching Netflix for approximately 6 hours got a lot of Stargate in! I have never quested in Icecrown. Comment by I can confirm via a conversation that I had with a GM today concerning this mob and phasing that there IS a phasing issue with the mob. Comment by Jaldy Thank you!
Looks like I need to get started. Comment by Aristar I know drded's post is a couple of years old, but the six hour respawn didn't hold true for me. Found Putridus's corpse after getting an alert while in Dalaran.
Returned to the Mord'rethar arch at to cover the time difference between him spawning and being killed. As of he still hasn't spawned, so the respawn cycle looks like 8 to 10 hour bracket as mentioned in other posts.
Edit: Spawned , so 10 hours wait for me. I have the most unbelievable lag there, so by the time I was able to get online, and find out where this NOC was that sent my NPCScan off, someone had likely already gotten him, because I never even saw him. I tell you what, though, it scared the bejeezus out of me, because I never would have expected scan to go off while I was in Dalaran, especially not for an NOC in Icecrown, lol.
Now I have to figure out how to remove him from my NPCscan without deleting the whole thing and losing the ones I've already gotten.
Comment by I found his corpse around 4am. Checked out the area at am and he had just spawned. Couldn't find him in time before someone engaged him. People taking him out at level 85 shouldn't have any issues.
Levels 80's however should take some precautions. The area he patrols through has a very large number of hostile npcs. Some of them are elite, and many of them respawn very quickly. A lot of people in their haste to tag him don't take this into account and end up dying to these nearby mobs fairly quickly.
If your going to try and take him out at level 80 or slightly less I'd recommend waiting until he pats through an area with little to no hostiles. Because of his incredibly large size he can be seen from a phenomenally far distance. Notably, he can be targeted in Dalaran and is known for scaring the living shit out of people when their NPCScans go off there. In the video below I am heading toward him from Dalaran, and although I didn't start recording until a bit after I left the city this should give a little bit of an idea just how far away NPCScan can pick him up from.
