Why is alduin taking no damage

Bottom line you cant kill Alduin untill you get to the hall and recruit the three heros I can see it all the way in the main forum index thingy! They have no impact on Alduin either. The first time I fought Alduin I had one follower and a summoned dremora who served as decoys while I used the dragonrend shout and applied lightening shocks from a distance with my staff. I tried to employ the same tactic in Sovngarde but without success.

Is there a way I can check Alduin's status through the command console? Maybe all I need to do is change a variable?
