This can be understandably frustrating , as the Grackles prevent the woodpeckers from feeding when they take control of the feeders in such a way.

So, what does my "friend" do about this matter? He kills a Grackle with a bb gun then hangs it from a tree branch and states I haven't seen any Grackles for a while". I was appalled. He has stated in the past that he shoots squirrells "in their rears" with the bb gun as well when they get on the feeders. Should I tell him that Grackles are a protected species or am I wasting my time? I have the feeling I will be wasting my time with this guy.

He seems to really like birds , but then comes out of the blue with this horrific bird-abuse story which really put me off time to de-friend? It got me thinking At a nice wild bird store I used to frequent until they closed last year they had a contraption that was meant to catch House Sparrows and gas them!

I was horrified and asked the owner , a very nice man btw, about it and he basically went on how H. Sparrows are considered pests and almost made extinct our wonderful native Blue Birds.

He made a strong point about competition between bird species, possible extinction and the fact that it was conservation efforts that brought the Blue Birds back from being a threatened species via putting up bluebird boxes , the monitoring of them, etc. However, I said to this man America for over a century now It was a joke, but also I was serious and he did not know how to take this. I just felt there has to be a better way than gassing House Sparrows.

After all, we brought the Blue Birds back via conservation efforts. Why do we consider some bird species 'pests'? I can think of a few criteria based on conversations with people who label certain species as 'pests': 1. Canada Geese pooping all over the place and 'ruining' corporate lawns.

There are just too many I've never once complained of the above. There's got to be a better way a humane way to deal with what is considered 'pest' birds or 'bad' bird behavior. I do realize there are indeed humane strategies put into practice daily.

Does anyone have any thoughts to add to this issue I realize this will be somewhat controversial Last edited: Feb 18, I'll add here to my original post since I'm not quite sure if it was sort of muddled and not clear enough. There are protected by the law bird species and there are unprotected species.

We had one pecking at the stainless steel rear panel on our Timpte hopper trailer. He probably sees his reflection but I've never seen a robin do this. It's usually a Cardinal that attacks windows like that. We finally put the trailer in the shed. Our neighbor lady says she has a Cardinal doing that.

Dearfield Co. You ever think it might be mating season??? My wife loves the birds and has feeders all over the place and we had that constant until we repainted the house and the painter asked after watching it if we wanted the windows done like at the bird sanctuary overspray to take the reflection off is all it is.

We took a bent truck bumper and cut and mounted it on a stand by the bird feeder so we can watch them court themselves. ITs funny but kind of sad at the same time. He probably sees his reflection and thinks its another bird, we had one do this to a window in our house every morning.

Try putting a cut out of an owl in the window. Central NE. Tired of Working. Central Sask. RM , Canada. I go through at least a rounds of 12 GA. I often get 6 to 10 at a time , some dead others wounded ; our yard cats come running from all directions when they hear a shotgun blast and they track down and finish off the wounded ; My best shot one time a couple years ago I got 21 or 23 with one shot , I lost count when the cats moved in..

We have a huge songbird population of about a dozen different kinds that seem to come back every year and they know I am not after them cause they will stay sitting on a line or nearby branch as I,ve just shot a black one I know farmers that carry a s.

Yeah they be on the list along with a ton of other trash birds. Grackles as well as every bird except starlings and english sparrows are protected in Ohio. However, similar to Wisconsin, you can get permission to shoot them and about any other critter that becomes a pest on your property.

The state will issue a permit, but if you call your local warden they usually give you verbal permission. Atleast you are covering yourself this way and face no possible legal issues. Calberry, thanks for that link as it is an excellent reference. Ted, thanks for the response. I hunted waterfowl for years when I was younger and healthier and admire the Canada goose but they have multiplied in such numbers they are now a considerable nuisance bird.

The lake is spring feed and clear, bass abound as do hybrid bluegills. Last year kids swimming there got real sick and everyone was surprised and a bit scared when e-coli was what made the kids sick. Many smaller lakes are e-coli cesspools due to goo-poo. We all know geese eat and poop all day everyday.

I hear ya, man. The geese at my work site and in my neighborhood drive me nuts. I would never shoot them either but, like you, am frustrated at having to clean my boots of the goo-poo great word lol every time I take the dogs for a walk around the pond or walk at my work site.

They make nests and chase cars that drive by it when the male deems it to be too close to the eggs. From another angle for years we had the same problem Sparrows,Greakles,Sarlings. By chance we ended up with about a years worth of Black Oil Sunflower seeds.
