The film contains suspense , thrills , twits and turns. From start to final the intrigue and thrilling scenes are continuous. This is a picture made among friends , as most of them either play , write or produce such as Giovanni Ribisi , Jason Lee and Kevin Polack. Good performance from Selma Blair as the attractive agoraphobic heiress who has not left her Manhattan loft apartment for almost two decades.
All-star-support-cast formed by known actors as Jason Lee , Kevin Pollack , Robert Guillaume and the veteran Beau Bridges as a Doctor and her sole confidant for most of her life. Suspenseful and moving musical score by Brian Tyler. Colorful though sometimes dark cinematography by Anastas Michos. The flick was compellingly written and realized by George Gallo. Excessively contrived but somewhat interesting suspense.
TxMike 21 November There is a general rule of thumb that the more characters have to explain story elements, the less good the movie is. And this one certainly is in that category. The story had no real "snap" to it, but the characters kept things interesting enough to keep watching. It is a movie where no one is what they seem to be when we are first introduced to them. Selma Blair is simply Abigail.
She lives in an expensive apartment at Columbus Circle in New York but never leaves and the shades are usually drawn to keep it dark inside. The man at the desk has never seen her even though he has been there several years. He communicates with her via notes under the door. It turns out she is heiress to a very large fortune, and tries to buy the apartment across the hall when it becomes vacant after the death of its elderly owner.
They are a discomfort to Abigail right away, with their loud arguments, and she witnesses, via the peephole, Charles beating Lillian. So she does the neighborly thing, drags her into her own to comfort her. Giovanni Ribisi is Detective Frank Giardello who shows up to investigate the death of the elderly woman, he thinks it may not have been an accident when she fell from her upper floor to her death.
Kevin Pollak is Klandermann, the man at the front desk. Beau Bridges is Abigail's doctor and old family friend Dr. Raymond Fontaine. It turns out that Abigail was not really her name, and almost everyone else was after her fortune. There is some good and some bad in that. The couple's fights were fakes, to gain access to her apartment, so they could install a spy bot on her computer to steal her banking password. They even killed Dr. Fontaine to keep him quiet. They planned to steal her millions and skip the country.
But in a fake argument where the man was shot with blanks, Abigail "defended" Lillian, stabbing Charles to death. Her plan was foiled, her boyfriend was dead. I found "Columbus Circle" highly entertaining. I figured it out, probably pretty early on, but I watch this kind of thing constantly.
The story concerns an agoraphobic woman, Abigail Clayton Selma Knight who is actually from a hugely wealthy family. Her disappearance made news years earlier; she has changed her name, never goes out, and slips notes under her door for the concierge.
Her only contact is with her doctor and family friend, Dr. Fontaine Beau Bridges. When the elderly woman next door dies, Abigail wants to purchase the apartment; then she would be alone on the penthouse floor. To her chagrin, the apartment is leased to a couple, Lillian and Klandermann. Meanwhile, Abigail has been bothered by the police because, though the woman supposedly fell, it looks to Detective Frank Giardello Giovanni Ribisi that she may have been murdered.
Things get worse for Abigail when it turns out that Lillian is a battered woman who begs her for help. This probably could have been a great movie in different hands. As it is, it's pretty good and also fairly typical of smaller films. Selma Blair reminded me a lot of Lara Flynn Boyle back in the day. I won't say the acting was Oscar-worthy but I've seen much worse. Having lived in New York City for 30 years, I'm not really sure why Columbus Circle was chosen for this fabulous apartment building.
It added nothing to the story. It's not the ritziest neighborhood in the city. Anyway, a good movie to rent. A reclusive heiress is psychologically trapped in her own apartment in one of the swankiest locations in Manhattan. It's a nice look at agoraphobia. The best thing about this movie is that story is satisfying and involving - some parts are a little pleasantly predictable but that's a good thing. Liked Selma's lines - they are quite delightful.
It's not a very high budget type movie but it shows a good story is better than shock tactics and effects in keeping your attention. Overall a feel good not too violent thriller. Worth a watch! When her neighbor dies she is upset that new tenants have moved in. When an ugly incident introduces Abigal to her new neighbors the lives of all involved begin to change. I have to say that this is normally the kind of movie that I love. A great cast where all their lives are intertwined with each other in some way.
A movie that keeps you guessing at the motives of everyone and just when you think you know what's going on a twist is thrown in. This is another type of movie that to talk about it would give away something that would ruin the enjoyment of it so I will just say that this is a must see movie that you will enjoy. I really did. Overall, a great thriller full of twists that keeps you guessing. I give it an A-. Even though she really comes from Michigan and is not from the East Coast at all, she nevertheless manages convincingly to come across as an East Coast preppie.
I am not sure how she does that, especially as she did not attend university where she could have honed her skills at preppie-ness. A film preppie of an earlier generation is Stockard Channing, and in her case she was from the East Coast and attended Radcliffe, where she even achieved summa cum laude.
So she is a real 'natural'. So how do they do it, these hicks from the sticks by which I mean girls who come from faraway and obscure places like California, Michigan, and Indiana? How do they 'prep'? In fact, what is a preppie anyway?
I used to wonder that very thing when I knew a lot of them long ago, in the days when they all wore identical tartan wraparound skirts held with gigantic safety pins and white socks, and earnestly pressed their clipboards to their breasts as they walked between classes at university.
Preppies are above all a tribe, and to defy the tribal dress code is to invite ostracism. But never mind, let's get back to the film. Or did we never even start on the film? So there we were, Selma Blair is being a preppie again.
This time she is a neurotic rich-girl recluse who is hiding out in style in a luxurious penthouse apartment overlooking Columbus Circle in New York City. She has agoraphobia and cannot go out. Then she becomes targeted by unscrupulous folk who, surprise surprise, do not love her for herself alone but who want her money. Who ever heard of such a thing in NYC?
They work on her vulnerabilities and are incredibly clever and devious in their plan to steal all her money. It is hair-raising stuff. Written and directed by George Gallo, this film could really have clicked, but it falls short of being a convincingly tense mystery thriller in the latter part of the film.
Selma Blair is entirely convincing as the girl, and was the perfect choice for the part. But the script really needed more work and thought. A miss, not a hit, but still worth seeing. This wasn't too bad a suspense movie about an agoraphobic lady who gets questioned in her neighbor's death, a new couple moves into the newly vacated apartment, and nobody is who they seem to be.
Selma Blair does a good job in the above mentioned role as her doctor and conceierge have been looking after her and providing her with contact to the outside world as this new situation arises. When the police start investigating, it leads to unsuspecting results, suspicious people, and situations that might remind you of other movies, as well as a surprising and well-done ending. I'm glad I watched this movie as the best part was the performances.
You will like it too. BUT as an entertaining film it cooks on all four burners! A murder of an elderly lady resident in the high rise apartments of Columbus Circle initiates the story. However the death is made to seem to be an unfortunate accident with her falling down a flight of stairs. Despite reservations by detective Frank Giardello Giovanni Ribisi the crime is noted as accidental. Opposite the apartment lives reclusive and agoraphobic Abigail Selma Blair , a sole heir to an immense fortune, but haunted by memories of fatherly abuse.
Intent on igniting claustrophobic tension camera angles sweep and swerve, music circles and entraps, but overall atmosphere appears in short fits to dissipate thanks to an overall terrible performing cast, visibly unconvinced by the story being portrayed.
Especially Blari and Smart fail to induce a sense of feasibility, not helped by the wandering script lightening up plot-hole receptors and creating a sense of ever-growing implausibility. Despite the best Hitchcock inspired intentions "Columbus Circle" requires a high level of gullibility with its occasionally farcical acting. A collection of good, underused actors and actresses have been assembled in "Columbus Circle".
It's the type of place that is described as anything can happen there. I'll take their word for it. The events that occur in the movie get increasingly far-fetched as we go along, and unfortunately, to the detriment of the enjoyment of the film. An old woman is found dead in her apartment. The simple answer is that it was an accidental fall but the police are there investigating it as a homicide.
The main character, Abigail Selma Blair lives across the hall. When a detective questions her, we are supposed to believe that is the very first time she has opened her door for anyone. Agoraphobics do not mysteriously cure in 1 session walk into the hallway. True agoraphobics do not suddenly want to jump on a plane!! She transfered it to another acc before Lillian was able to withdraw it. The movie is crazy Abigail real name was Justine Waters she just changed her name Abigail for her own saftey but she most definantly did take Lillian identity after she had her arrested because she knew that Lillian would be put away for long time and she can afford to leave with no baggage she has that type of money.
